2019 Chevrolet Sonic: A Great Inexpensive Option in the Subcompact Segment

Though showing the signs of aging, Chevrolet Sonic still manages to be an inexpensive ride with amazing tech features. With 2019 Chevrolet Sonic, the subcompact and sedan hatchback lineup enters its 8th year with a new paint color, called “Shock.”

The ride retains the excellent fuel economy and a few but robust active safety features but comes in a visually refreshing style. The 2019 Chevrolet Sonic MSRP starts from $15,420 for the sedan and $18,020 for the hatchback.

What You’ll Appreciate:

  • Above average cargo capacity
  • Comfortable, noise-free interior
  • Excellent fuel economy (Best is 32 mpg with the turbo-4 engine)
  • Smooth turbo-4 engine
  • Wide-ranging optional upgrades

What You’ll Not:

  • Cramped rear seat
  • No adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking
  • Timid base 1.8L engine

In addition to offering buyers a choice of engines, transmissions, and body styles, 2019 Chevrolet Sonic comes in 3 trim levels. These are namely LS, LT, and Premier. However, the hatchback is offered in only LT and Premier trims and no LS trim.

Anyways, the LS trim comes with 15-inch steel wheels with plastic covers, manually-adjustable mirrors, and wind-up windows. Generally, not many people like to prefer the LS trim.

Next up is the LT trim, which is, by the way, the most popular option among the 2019 Chevrolet Sonic trim triad. It features 15-inch alloy wheels, a 6-speaker audio system, cruise control, and power windows and mirrors.

Some of the standard features on the Premier trim are being offered as upgradable options with the LT trim. The topmost trim offers 17-inch alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, enhanced digital instruments, fog lamps, and power-adjustable front seats.

Together with the 7.0-inch infotainment system, each 2019 Chevrolet Sonic trim comes with integration support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Moreover, each of the trim has a 4G LTE Wi-Fi antenna. Such tech features are not even available on some of the rides that cost 3 times as much as the 2019 Chevrolet Sonic.

Interior and Cargo Capacity

Although the front seats are comfortable and amply spacious, the rear seats are cramped, especially the headroom. Even though supporting a low price-tag, the interior looks and feels sturdy and has impressive low-sheen textures.

Regardless of the sedan or hatchback form, the subcompact ride has a decent cargo capacity. While the sedan make offers 14.9 cubic feet of storage, the hatchback accommodates for as much as 19 cubic feet of storage. Moreover, it has a concealed storage bin beneath the floor.

Ample-sized cup holders are present throughout the 2019 Chevrolet Sonic along with a few utilitarian storage bins.

Engine and Performance

2019 Chevrolet Sonic is fun to drive, especially when equipped with the 1.4L turbo-4 engine. It produces 138 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque. Also, opting for the 1.4L engine adds 1 more gear to the manual transmission box.

The base engine is the 1.8L 4-cylinder engine which produces the same horsepower as that of its 1.4L variant but offers a less 125 lb.-ft. of torque. 2019 Chevrolet Sonic comes standard with the 5-speed manual transmission which can be replaced with the 6-speed automatic mode.

2019 Chevrolet Sonic is amazingly comfortable and quiet. Also, the handling is above average and the ride offers great overall control.

The base 1.8L engine offers a strained acceleration, which can be improved by simply opting for the 1.4L turbo-4 engine. The best thing about this option is that it doesn’t impose a mileage penalty.

Exterior & Styling

The 2019 Chevrolet Sonic has a dated styling and the signature two-part grille is less protuberant this time as compared to the previous years.

The hatchback looks somewhat better than its sedan counterpart. To spice up the things a little, 2019 Chevrolet Sonic is available in a range of colors along with a new hue dubbed “Shock.”

2019 Chevrolet Sonic comes with automatic emergency braking and multiple airbags. Optional safety features available to the ride include automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, and parking assist.

Low on active safety features, 2019 Chevrolet Sonic is still to be rated for crash-test scores. Nonetheless, the 2018 version received 5 stars from NHTSA in almost all categories while performed “Good” in every test conducted by the IIHS.

The Chevy Sonic is a low-budget car that has got a lot of features considering its price. It lacks the power but can do everything you can ask for from a daily driver. Good, comfortable seats and fine-looking exterior is good for a hatch this size. However, the interior has a lot of hard plastic in use but overall the car is good to go.
